I find this instructional strategy particularly helpful for preparing students for taking tests. My nursing students have to take a Registration exam at the end of their 4 year program that creates a lot of anxiety for the students. The way of thinking that is required for this exam is complex and a new skill for many students (instructors alike) therefore there is a big learning curve. The students often first interface with these types of questions in their midterm and final exams but I now plan to utilize formative quizzes to prepare them well before their exams. This will help alleviate any anxiety by helping them learn the critical thinking that is required when answering these questions. I also like this engaging strategy as it gives the instructor instant feedback about where students may be confused on a particular topic so that more understanding can be achieved.
